As the hurricane season is set to begin tomorrow (Sunday), the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is urging the public to stay vigilant and prepare for the risks and dangers associated with these natural hazards.
Additionally, NEMO reminds the public that the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season will run from June 1 to November 30, 2025.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has announced its list of 21 named tropical cyclones for the 2025 season: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.
NEMO urges everyone to take immediate action to reduce or minimize risks. Essential steps include trimming overhanging branches, clearing drains and waterways to prevent flooding, and stocking up on water, non-perishable food items, batteries, phone chargers, flashlights, and other necessary supplies.
NEMO is actively enhancing national preparedness by conducting extensive training with volunteers to ensure a swift and coordinated response in the event of a disaster.
The public must remember that the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services is the official source for weather-related updates and information, while the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is the authoritative source for disaster-related information.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs successfully hosted the annual Pre-Atlantic Hurricane Season Preparedness Meeting on Wednesday, May 21.
Key department heads and health sector representatives from across the island gathered to assess Saint Lucia’s readiness for the 2025–2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
The interactive forum focused on updating disaster plans, identifying gaps in emergency response, and addressing health risks to better protect lives and strengthen national resilience.
