Unfair Fuel Pricing in Saint Lucia – Breaking Down the Numbers

By James Stanislaus

Fellow Saint Lucians,

We’ve been taken for a ride, and it’s time to demand answers! For 9 years, our government has used the modified market pass-through petroleum pricing mechanism to adjust fuel prices based on international oil prices. But what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander, it seems.

In June 2022, when international oil prices soared to $122 per barrel, we were forced to pay EC$17.95 per gallon at the pump. The highest gas prices ever. But when prices dropped to $85 per barrel in April 2023, our government graciously reduced the price to EC$16.50 per gallon. Sounds fair, right?

Fast forward to today, and the international oil price has plummeted to $74 per barrel – a whopping $11 decrease from April 2023. You’d think our government would pass on these significant savings to us, the consumers. BUT NO, the price at the pump remains stuck at EC$16.50 per gallon!

That’s right, folks! While international oil prices have decreased by 38% since June 2022, the price of gas at our pumps has only decreased by a paltry 8%. Where has the 30% savings gone? It’s as if our government is playing a game of hide-and-seek with our hard-earned money!

Why is it that when prices rise, we’re forced to bear the burden, but when prices fall, the government gets to keep the difference? This is nothing short of dishonesty. We are being robbed in broad daylight by our government! Can you believe that??

We call on the Philip J Pierre administration to explain this blatant discrepancy and to pass on the savings to the people of St. Lucia. It’s time for transparency and accountability in our government’s dealings with fuel pricing.

Share this post if you’re fed up with being taken advantage of and demand a fair deal for Saint Lucians!
