SELENA Ross, another young athlete from Saint Lucia is set to represent the West Indies Under-19 Women’s team.

She will be part of the West Indies team for the highly anticipated ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.

This marks her second appearance representing the ‘Windies,’ after her impressive debut performance against the USA Under-19s last July.

During that five-match series in Trinidad and Tobago, the 17-year-old left-arm fast bowler took the lead, claiming five wickets and achieving the best match figures of the series with 3-12. She was also instrumental in Team Saint Lucia’s victory in the Windward Islands Championship earlier this year, which culminated in her senior Windward Islands debut in March.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) unveiled the 15-member squad last month, demonstrating their confidence in this promising lineup.

Currently enrolled at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College [SALCC] and a key member of the Saint Lucia High Performance Centre [HPC], Ross joins the region’s top emerging talents to take on the world’s best players.

CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe stated: “We are proud to announce our Under-19 Women’s squad for the ICC World Cup 2025, a team that embodies the future of West Indies cricket. Under the leadership of captain Samara Ramnath and vice-captain Asabi Callender, this skilled group of players has shown remarkable promise through our development programmes, and we firmly believe this squad illustrates the growing strength of women’s cricket in the Caribbean.”

Bascombe emphasised the importance of including players from across the region: “This selection reflects our commitment to nurturing talent from every territory. We are confident they possess the skills to compete at the highest levels while gaining invaluable international experience. The future of West Indies women’s cricket is undoubtedly bright with these outstanding young athletes.”

Head coach Robert Samuels expressed pride in the preparation of the team: “Our young players have demonstrated incredible dedication and improvement. We are resolute that they will represent the West Indies with honour and showcase the bright future of women’s cricket in our region.”

The tournament’s group phase will run from January 19 to 23, with the top three teams from each group advancing to the Super six phase scheduled for January 25 to 29. The Windies are set to compete rigorously, prepared through specialised training camps at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua and Barbuda, along with various tours throughout the year.

The tournament will see 16 teams from around the globe, competing from January 18 to February 2 across multiple venues in Malaysia. West Indies is drawn into Group A, alongside India, Sri Lanka, and the host, Malaysia.

The team departed for Malaysia on January 1, ready for a pre-tournament camp from January 5-10. The Windies women will continue their push for victory with two warm-up games—against Nepal on January 13 and New Zealand on January 15—before kicking off their group stage campaign on January 19.
