EQUITY and Social Justice Minister Joachim Henry provided a robust update last week on the government’s comprehensive stimulus programme through the STEP project, which is designed to enable individuals to earn a sustainable income.
Henry confirmed that there has been a significant escalation in the cleanup of roads and their surroundings across communities’ island-wide.
“This Stimulus Programme is not merely about cutting grass along the roadside; it involves a thorough examination of our environment, including addressing overhead trees that obstruct visibility for drivers,” he stated.
A substantial amount of this vital work is being executed in the Morne Fortune area on the outskirts of Castries, as well as along the southern belt of the island. “There is a lot happening in terms of stimulus activities aimed at maintaining a clean environment and fostering Saint Lucians’ appreciation of their surroundings,” Henry asserted.
Earlier this month, the government officially launched the STEP programme, known as the Christmas Stimulus Programme, which is directly focused on supporting social development initiatives.
The first phase of this programme was announced by the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF), marking its launch for 2024.
The STEP programme in Saint Lucia-Strengthening the Economy Through Stimulus and Employment-delivers crucial short-term employment opportunities for citizens and actively stimulates local economic activity.
The program prioritises:
– Job Creation: It provides immediate temporary jobs for unemployed individuals, particularly in response to economic disruptions or crises;
– Community Development: Funded projects under STEP enhance local neighborhoods through infrastructure improvements and community clean-ups;
– Social Support: By creating job opportunities, the program supports families during challenging economic times, thereby strengthening community resilience.
– Economic Stimulus: By offering jobs and skills training, the program is designed to invigorate the local economy and empower individuals to achieve financial independence.
Overall, the STEP program is determined to empower individuals and promote sustainable economic growth in Saint Lucia.
