Practical Strategies for Diabetes Management Revealed at Diabetes Wellness Workshop

.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting healthier communities by hosting a Diabetes Wellness Workshop at the Bethel Blessings Conference Centre in Dennery. The workshop aimed to empower participants with practical strategies to better manage diabetes and improve their overall well-being.

This initiative attracted a wide cross-section of attendees, including individuals living with diabetes, their family members, and those seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the condition. Through interactive sessions, participants received vital insights into the importance of balanced nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and the incorporation of affordable, locally available foods into their daily diets.

Senior Medical Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases, Dr. Shana Cyr-Philbert, emphasised the holistic approach taken during the workshop. “We are doing something quite holistic today. We have individuals with diabetes, family members of persons with diabetes, and those simply wanting to learn about the condition. Our aim is to provide an in-depth understanding of diabetes and effective management strategies. The participation has been phenomenal. Our team, including nutritionists, health educators, nurses, and physicians, is fully engaged in equipping participants with essential information,” Dr. Cyr-Philbert said.

The workshop fostered a supportive environment by using smaller group settings where participants could engage in meaningful discussions, share personal experiences, and learn from each other. Dr. Cyr-Philbert highlighted the effectiveness of this approach: “Research shows that smaller group interactions are more impactful. Participants can share their experiences and learn directly from others, which enhances understanding. In this setting, we also use Creole to ensure clear communication, breaking down complex concepts into relatable, actionable advice. This is often difficult to achieve in formal health centre settings or during large presentations.”

Participants lauded the workshop for its practical and community-centred approach. One attendee remarked: “This initiative is excellent for educating the community on how to take care of themselves and their loved ones. Diabetes is a significant concern in Saint Lucia, and often, we may not know the best practices. Learning from others and participating in discussions gives us tools to make meaningful changes in our lives.”

The Diabetes Wellness Workshop is part of the Ministry of Health’s broader strategy to reduce the prevalence and impact of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Saint Lucia. By focusing on community engagement, education, and preventive care, the Ministry seeks to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health.
