Anse-la-Raye Primary School has Newly Renovated Library

The Anse-la-Raye Primary School has a newly renovated library, made possible through a collaboration with the Hunter J. Francois Library (HJFL) at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. This newly revitalized space will now serve as a vital educational resource for students, offering them a dynamic and inspiring environment to nurture their love for reading and learning. The Library was officially opened on Friday December 6th at a ceremony attended by the District Representative, the Minister of Education, Board and Staff of the College as well as representatives of the Anse-la Raye Primary School and community.

In 2022, in response to a request from the Anse-la-Raye Primary School, the Hunter J. Francois Library initiated a project to support the restoration and enhancement of the school’s library. This project was prioritized due to the school’s urgent need for physical restoration, proper collection management, and the development of a sustainable library program that would benefit students for years to come.

The newly renovated library aligns with the vision of Hunter J. François, whose dedication to empowering communities through education and providing equitable access to resources drives initiatives like this one. The project also complements the library’s mission to create vibrant, enriching spaces that inspire learning and empower future generations.

Project Highlights:

• Collaborative Support from SALCC: The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College made significant contributions to the project, including the provision of necessary supplies and technical support. Staff and students from SALCC provided assistance with electrical and maintenance tasks, ensuring the library was fully functional and safe.

• Carpentry Works: Carpentry tasks, including the enhancement of the library’s design and functionality, were completed by skilled College staff and a local carpenter, bringing the space to life.

• Cataloging and Automation of Books: The Hunter J. François Library staff successfully cataloged over 1,500 books and began the process of automating the collection, ensuring efficient management and greater accessibility for students and educators alike.

• Library Mural: A vibrant mural was installed in the library, celebrating the works of local authors and adding a creative and inspirational touch to the space.

• Renovations Supported by the Parliamentary Representative: The Parliamentary Representative for Anse La Raye/Canaries played an instrumental role in facilitating critical renovations, including the installation of a new roof and air conditioning, transforming the library into a welcoming and comfortable space for students.

• Educational Workshop: On November 7, 2024, a workshop titled “Unlocking the Power of the School Library” was hosted at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. The workshop provided educators with practical strategies for integrating library resources into their teaching and effective school library management.

This revitalized library is a beacon of opportunity for the students of Anse-la-Raye Primary, fostering an environment of learning, creativity, and growth. With ongoing support and engagement from the Hunter J. Francois Library and the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, the Anse-la-Raye Primary School’s library will continue to thrive as an essential tool for empowering the next generation.
