Saint Lucia Women’s Rugby Team Outplayed in Tough Series

Saint Lucia’s women’s sevens rugby squad crashed out at the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Olympic qualifying tournament in Canada this  weekend August 19 to 20.  In the preliminary rounds, Saint Lucia went down to Canada 59 – 0, Mexico 19 – 5, and Jamaica 33 – 10. In Semifinal Number Two versus Canada on Sunday 20 the host defeated Saint Lucia 41 – 7. For the third-place silverware, Jamaica defeated Saint Lucia 27 – 12.

Meanwhile, Canadian women and USA men qualified for Paris 2024 Olympic Games.  Canada’s women equipped with a 53 – 0 win over Mexico in the final of the Rugby Americas North Sevens, while the USA beat Canada 24-14 in the men’s final to punch their ticket to France.

The Saint Lucia squad included Renetta Fredericks (Captain), Kisha Edgar, Makeba Alcide, Kezia Cools, Kera Donnelly, Chantel John, Electra Marcelle, Allana Paul, Shammah Philgence, Kameka President, Shawnette St. Juste and Mary Roberts. Technical Staff: Wayne Pantor, Technical Director/ Coach, Roger Butcher, Manager, and Zhenya Allain, Physiotherapist.

The Saint Lucia team is expected back home later this week.
