Share of the Taiwanese government. The latest aid package comes in the form of a gifted 20ft container, this time, containing health amenities.

The much-needed supplies were on March 21 handed over jointly to officials of the Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment and Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Equity Irene Gaspard, expressed sincere thanks to the Taiwanese Government for the timely supplies and stated that the donation would assist the ministry in further assisting the most vulnerable and differently-abled in society.

“We recognize that today’s gesture by the Taiwanese Government is not only of value to this country but greatly complements the current efforts of the government and is very timely,” said Gaspard. “ Today’s donation will enable both the Ministry (Equity) and Health (department)  to respond to the needs of persons living with disability in a much more sustainable manner,”

Taiwan’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia His Excellency Peter Chen stressed the significance of the donation, noting that it symbolizes Taiwan’s continued commitment to the collaboration and partnership between the two governments and their people.

Said Ambassador Chen: “On behalf of the Government of Taiwan, I am extremely happy to hand over 465 mobility assistant devices includ-ing wheelchairs, steel folding commode chairs and single arm walkers. This donation not only demonstrates the continued support of the Taiwanese government, it is also conveying love and care from the people of Taiwan.”

Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs Moses Jn. Baptiste conveyed thanks and gratitude on behalf of the government of Saint Lucia, for the kind and significant gesture.

“I am happy to be here… to represent the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs and the Government of Saint Lucia to say thanks to the people of Taiwan and Ambassador Peter Chen and his whole team for working with us. Indeed, the amount of 465 is a significant donation. Significant not only because they are needed but because this donation targets the most vulnerable,” noted the Minister.

In 2014 the Equity Ministry implemented a Disability Grant Programme targeting children with disabilities, up to the age of 21.
