Ciceron Secondary School 2022 National Mathematics Competition Bigger and Better

Last year the Ciceron Secondary School engaged in several activities for Mathematics Month and this school year they are at it again. Activities included: Mathematics challenges, quizzes, dress down, poster in house competition and a national Mathematics Competition. The theme for Mathematics month this year is “Mathematics Unites.” The school will be promoting the theme with its national Mathematics competition, together with online learning Post the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim of this venture is to sensitize the public and students of the importance of online learning, practicability of Mathematics and facing academic challenges after a pandemic. This is the school’s second year running the national competition and they want this year to be bigger and better with key sponsors on board. The school is seeking to change the perception of the youths’ attitudes towards Mathematics by tapping into their interest with exciting challenges especially after this pandemic.

Mathematics is a major problem islandwide, even regionally with examination results showing a decline in performances. This is a major concern to the Mathematics department at the school. “Only when students see the true value of Mathematics in a different light and start practising meaningfully, then we will all start seeing better results,” echoed the department.

The mathematics theme “Mathematics Unites” fits nicely with the department’s objectives where students can see Mathematics in a different light integrated into everyday life and various subject areas. The National Mathematics Competition spear headed by the Ciceron Secondary School is once again opened to infant, primary and Secondary Schools Islandwide. The competition is based on creating your own video, song, poem, or poster based on the theme: “Mathematics Unites.” The competition extends throughout the month of December 2022 for all submissions so students can submit virtually to the school. All submissions can be sent to the following email; [email protected].

The Mathematics department would like to give a big thank you to all their sponsors so far; Food Centre, Carro’s Kitchen, Auntie Pam’s Boutique, Essence Boutique, St Lucia Distillers, Suzie’s Beauty Salon, JOIE Innovative Learning Solutions, Caribbean Cinemas St. Lucia, Windward Island Gases, LubsEdutime.com and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.

Note that the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is giving a one-year scholarship to any current form five student who wins in the secondary category. The Ciceron Secondary school encourages all school students to participate. Coming out of this competition the school intends on producing an educational video to be shared to all schools showing how Mathematics unites and integrates in our everyday life.
