Saint Lucia, on Wednesday 17th February 2021, administered the first Covid-19 Vaccines to frontline workers.
Former immunization manager, Nurse Julietta Cassius, became Saint Lucia’s first citizen to be vaccinated.
She encouraged citizens to get vaccinated when their number is called especially those who have already tested positive for the virus. “Even with natural immunity it is still not full immunity so regardless of one having the virus it is still important to receive the vaccine.”
Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, his wife, Minister of Health Mary Isaac and CMO Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, former CMO Dr. Stephen King who opined that the vaccine in his view is our only way out, were among the frontliners receiving their first jab.
The Astra-Zeneca vaccine according to President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association, Dr. Merle Clarke is very efficient in preventing serious illness which would lead to hospitalization and untimely death.
Saint Lucians in the coming weeks will have their opportunity to voluntarily line up for their shot of the Astra-Zeneca vaccine.
