THERE was no popping of champagne and cutting of cake for this grand occasion, but the few words spoken by the various speakers expressed gratitude and appreciation to Massy United Insurance for sponsoring Under – 19 schools cricket in Saint Lucia for another year.

Newly appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports Dr Anthony George on behalf of the Ministry said he was proud to partner with Massy United for 30 years; Massy United had ensured that the development of good talent and good cricketing skills is at an all-time high throughout our nation.

He said over the years they have generated and nurtured a number of excellent talents here in Saint Lucia and a number of our star cricketers had emerged from this tournament, the likes of John Eugene, Claudius Emmanuel, Darren Sammy and Johnson Charles just to name a few.

Operations manager for the St. Lucia Cricket Association Bryan Calixte took the time out to thank the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports for organizing the tournament and Massy United for their 30 unbroken years in sponsoring the under – 19 schools tournament. Calixte went back to 1998 when he was part of the whole organization of the United Insurance Cricket as it was called then. He said, “There was fierce rivalry at the time with the likes of Vieux Fort Comprehensive, St. Mary’s College, Clendon Mason Memorial, Corinth and Piaye Secondary Schools. St.Lucia produced the likes of Gary Mathurin, Darren Sammy and a whole host of other players; thanks to United Insurance for giving them that opportunity to go out there and play”.

General Manager for Massy United Faye Miller said: “Its 30 unbroken years not out and we are very proud of our consistent record; not many sponsors do that. This year our contribution is $30,000.00 towards the tournament and it is the highest amount we have ever given”.

The sponsorship includes the usual uniforms and prizes to the top three teams. Throughout the tournament they will recognize players of the preliminary round, quarter / semi and finals, because they want to encourage the players.

With the assistance from the Ministry, Massy United will select a Massy United All Stars Team, as they have done in the past. This year they want to continue that trend, but will do it in a big way. Massy’s intention is to make the tournament exciting so the players and the schools can vie for a spot on the All Stars team as they the players will be rewarded for their efforts.
