ON the eve of Saint Lucia’s 37th Independence Anniversary, the John Compton Highway between LUCELEC’s headquarters in Sans Souci, to the Vigie Roundabout, Vide Bouteille and back will be the hot spot when Project Breakaway hosts its inaugural Beacon Independence Cycling Challenge.

According to the organizers well over 40 local cyclists are expected to compete in four events: Team Time Trials, Devil Takes the Hindmost, Power Sprints and a 37 kilometre Mass Start race.

The event is scheduled to start at around 1.30 p.m. Sunday following brief remarks by a representative from Beacon Insurance Company and head of Project Breakaway Ernest Ottley.

Ottley said, “We are pleased to partner with Beacon Insurance Company for this Independence Day event and can only hope that the partnership grows for the benefit of cycling in Saint Lucia. We already have teams from Mon Repos, Dennery, Castries, but the races are open to all.”

Project Breakaway was established five years ago by a group of cyclists who believe in community – both as a community of professional sportsmen and sportswomen, and a community that promotes health, fitness and charity in Saint Lucia.

According to Ottley, “We have mounted several rides – fun rides and competitive rides – over the past five years including rides to raise funds for charitable causes. We have made contributions, for example, to the Faustin Home in Soufriere, Cornerstone, Boys Training Centre and Faces of Cancer, among many others.

The races planned for are sanctioned by the St. Lucia Cycling Association and will subscribe to rules of international competition as set by the Union CyclisteInternationale (UCI).
