Lantern Competition Today

THE December festivals are a series of traditional and historical festivals which bring Saint Lucians together in the spirit of community through artistic creativity with the use of light – a symbol of rebirth.

One of the highlights of the December festivals is the Lantern Festival – a unique and extravagant expression of creativity through lanterns. The Lantern Competition, part of the annual Lantern Festival, will take place at the National Cultural Centre today from 2:00 p.m.

The competition is a showcase of skills which will be judged in three categories – Traditional, National and Contemporary/Modern. Participants 17 years and under are adjudged in the junior division while anyone 18 years or older will be considered a senior. Participants are awarded with special consideration given to the skill level employed in the creations. Pre-judging will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on competition day.

Interested individuals were to have registered for the Lantern Competition by yesterday. The organizers said no registrations would take place today.

Tomorrow, the walls of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception will resound with music as soloists and groups raise their voices in singing. Performances from JUSTUS, Michael Robinson, Vision, Irvin “Ace” Loctor, Heart and Soul, Ave Maria Primary School Choir and Shirley Ann Cyril-Mayers are among those expected to inspire the congregation.

The Festival of Carols brings a wide cross section of the society together in the spirit of joy and singing. The festival begins at 7:30 p.m.
