Yesterday was quite an enjoyable one for Mrs. Mary Annell AKA Aunty Abel who celebrated her 103rd birthday.
Born in Pierrot, Vieux Fort North area, Aunty Abel, as she is known to everyone, is a legend in her own right, more so in the La Caye, Dennery community, the place she settled in after moving from Pierrot in search of economic opportunities, as her son Wilson Christopher noted.
What made Aunty Abel so popular in La Caye was her love for children. The story is told of her raising up many children in the community.
She’s the only surviving member of eight sisters and two brothers. Aunty Abel is the mother of seven children, all in the diaspora, thirty plus grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great, great, grandchild.
Her family, as she explains, also includes numerous adopted children and countless family and friends near and far.
Aunty Abel is an avid believer in God and attributes her longevity to God’s blessings and her being careful and selective in what she ate over the years.
Tributes poured into Aunty Abel’s home yesterday on her milestone of 103 years. The celebrations, however, were toned down due to COVID-19, as her children ensured that all who trooped in to wish her happy birthday observed COVID-19 protocols.
“My siblings and myself want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the area and the wider community for taking such good care of our mom during our absence,” Wilson said.
