THE battle line has been drawn heading into tomorrow’s semifinal of the Inter-Secondary Schools Track and Field Championship organized by the Department of Youth Development and Sports and the Saint Lucia Athletics Association.
The event – dubbed “The Boys and Girls Championship” — is slated for the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground and will commence from 9:30 a.m. and feature over 800 of the island’s best student athletes on show following the two zonal qualifiers. St. Joseph’s Convent and St. Mary’s College won the northern zone qualifier and Micoud Secondary and Vieux Fort Comprehensive the southern zone qualifier.
The biggest event on the Department of Youth Development and Sports’ calendar and the most popular athletics competition in Saint Lucia, the championship features athletes from the island’s 25 secondary schools. Following tomorrow’s semifinals, the championship moves into high gear on Saturday with the grand final at the same venue.
The level of performance at the two recently-held zonal qualifiers was extremely impressive and tomorrow some of the outstanding athletes in the girls division will battle it out, including Joy Edward and ThomykaValcent (Leon Hess), Lesley-Ann Spencer (Castries Comprehensive), Zoe Dorville and Kayla Charles, (Entrepot), Danielle Charles, Neema Leon, Nakeisha Louis and Nysa Pierre (SJC), Effie Felix (Corinth), KamillahMonroque (Sir Arthur Lewis), Mia Louis (Babonneau), and Kimani Alphonse and Zadie St. Louis (Vieux Fort Comprehensive).
The rivalry will continue among the boys as Kenneth Verneuil, Jeanmeachel Etienne and Frayne Peter (Choiseul), Asa Francis and RawleClauzelma (Vieux Fort Comprehensive), Savi Philip (Micoud), Jan Julien (Soufriere), Alexander Leon (Beanefield), Michael Joseph, Tyrese Paul and Reuben Nichols (Corinth), Miguel Charlery and ArdeneHallpike (SMC), Jean Lux-Robert (Castries Comprehensive), Nyrick Joseph and Fredrick Jean Pierre (Sir Arthur Lewis), Devon Moise (Gros Islet) and Jude Louison (Piaye), do battle for supremacy.
After four colourful days of competition and some unfortunate injuries to a few athletes, final results in the Southern Zone Qualifier held at the La Ressource playing field last week were as follows:
In the male division, Micoud Secondary emerged champions with 223 points. Second place went to Choiseul Secondary on 214 points, third to Vieux Fort Comprehensive on 152 points and fourth place to Beanefield Secondary on 132 points.
In the female division, Vieux Fort Comprehensive won with 209 points. Second place went to Micoud Secondary (151 points), third to Soufriere Comprehensive (141 points) and fourth to Beanefield Secondary (131 points).
For the Northern Zone Qualifier held last week, St. Joseph’s Convent and St. Mary’s College topped the points table with 167 points and 154 points respectively. The two schools gave stunning performances to win way ahead of the other participating schools.
