CDF Calls On Saint Lucia To Show Its La Magéwit Colours Ahead Of October 17 Gwan Fèt

.

PRESS RELEASE — The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) is calling on Saint Lucians to show their cultural pride as the island prepares to celebrate La Magéwit, with two activities scheduled for October 16 and 17, 2026.

On Friday, October 16, the public is encouraged to participate in La Magéwit Colours Day by incorporating blue or purple into their everyday attire. From schools and workplaces to businesses and communities, the initiative invites everyone to demonstrate their appreciation for one of Saint Lucia’s longstanding folk traditions.

“La Magéwit is far more than an annual celebration; it is a treasured expression of Saint Lucia’s intangible cultural heritage, embodying our history, identity, creativity and national pride. As one of our two traditional flower festivals, it is our collective responsibility to preserve, promote and ensure the continued relevance of this important cultural tradition.

Through initiatives such as La Magéwit Colours Day and Gwan Fèt, the Cultural Development Foundation seeks to extend the celebration beyond the traditional festival setting, encouraging greater participation across our schools, workplaces and communities. In particular, engaging our young people is critical to ensuring that this cherished tradition is not only celebrated today but sustained and passed on to future generations.” Says Executive Director of the CDF Raymona Henry-Wynne.

Participants are encouraged to capture their attire or singing their favourite La Magéwit song, share on social media and tag @cdfsaintlucia.

The celebration continues on Saturday, October 17, with the annual La Magéwit Gwan Fèt in the Dennery Village. Activities begin at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, followed by a parade through Dennery Village and the Gwan Fèt at the Dennery Multipurpose Center Grounds.

Beyond the colourful costumes, music and ceremonial traditions, La Magéwit flower festival represents generations of cultural expression, community identity and the preservation of Saint Lucia’s folk heritage.
