The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Saint Lucia have expressed concern over the lack of attention afforded to victims of domestic violence when survivors seek help and justice.

The group notes that accounts describe painful experiences being rehashed, without the privacy, sensitivity and care survivors deserve; and that institutions must not add to the trauma of abuse, and reports should be handled efficiently.

The women’s advocacy group asserted: “The Caucus will not turn a blind eye to domestic violence.  Violence and intimidation threaten the safety, dignity and progress of women and girls.”

It added, “A society that seeks to promote and elevate women must also confront the violence that can limit their freedom and participation.”

In light of this, the Caucus calls for:

-Regular trauma informed training for police, health workers, prosecutors and other front-line personnel

– Reporting procedures that protect privacy, accurately record accounts, document injuries and reduce unnecessary repeated interviews

– Clear access to counselling, medical care, legal assistance, protection and safe accommodation

– A transparent, effective and impartial justice process that communicates clearly, handles cases promptly and respects confidentiality, due process and everyone’s rights

– Comprehensive prevention education that promotes respect, consent and healthy relationships; actively engaging boys and men in refraining from harmful attitudes and behaviours and equipping women and girls with age-appropriate knowledge, practical safety strategies, awareness of warning signs, and clear pathways for seeking support and protection.

While responsibility for violence rests with those who perpetrate it, prevention efforts must equip the whole society to reduce risk, intervene early and respond effectively.

– Anonymized reporting on cases and outcomes, with privacy safeguards, to identify gaps and track progress

The Women’s Parliamentary Caucus of Saint Lucia is committed to  supporting  mechanisms  for survivors and will work with relevant agencies and community partners to strengthen prevention, support and access to justice.

Moreover, the women’s group emphasized, “We stand with all victims and their families. Their experiences must be met with compassion, dignity and action.”
