In a bid to foster strong family values within society, the Department of Equity, Social Justice, Gender, and Older Persons has launched its national “Fathers Who Care” campaign.
This initiative aims to promote responsible fatherhood, strengthen family relationships, and encourage men to contribute to the development of citizens, families, and leaders of tomorrow.
Under the theme “Men Raising the Next Generation,” the campaign unites government agencies, community organizations, faith-based groups, and development partners to support fathers and male role models throughout Saint Lucia.
During the launch, Andrad Felix, Director of Men of Faith Ministries and a key development partner, highlighted the urgent need for such a campaign.

“Over the past six months, our organization has engaged men and boys through various programs and initiatives,” he remarked.
Felix emphasized the extensive community work being undertaken: “This work has revealed the challenges faced by men and families in Saint Lucia. Through our Man Power Project, we’ve met men eager to become better fathers, partners, and leaders, but often lacking the necessary support, guidance, and opportunities for growth.”
He further explained that this collaboration is essential, noting a shared understanding that families are the foundation of society, and men bear a significant responsibility to their families and communities. The initiative aims to create opportunities for men to access mentorship, guidance, and personal development support, while promoting positive masculinity, shared responsibility, and stronger family bonds.
Barry Innocent, a representative from the International Men’s Network, articulated the importance of cooperation between government and faith-based organizations in addressing the challenges facing men and families. He urged men to take greater responsibility for their health and well-being, and encouraged young men to reject violence in favor of positive alternatives that strengthen families and communities.
“And those young men involved in crime, I appeal to you to stop. Every time you take a life, you are breaking a family. You’re leaving children without fathers, which perpetuates absenteeism,” Innocent cautioned.

He added, “Let’s choose peaceful negotiations instead of violence; let’s seek alternatives to conflict.”
Featured speaker Hilary Charlamagne, a retired lecturer from Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, challenged fathers and father figures to embrace their roles in shaping the values, character, and future success of their children. He asserted the profound impact of positive fatherhood on families and communities.
“I believe the dysfunctionality we see today is linked to men. Don’t place blame solely on the government; while it has its role, many issues stem from men needing to step up,” Charlamagne stated. “Men have the capacity to recreate beauty in our communities and inspire our children to thrive.”
He concluded, “Men must again become the inspirations to their families, building admiration not just through appearance but through character.”
Emma Hippolyte, Minister responsible for Gender Affairs, delivered a national message to fathers, framing the campaign as a response to growing concerns affecting families across Saint Lucia.
“We must restart the clock. Fathers who care are the cornerstone of strong families and thriving communities,” emphasized the minister. “When men embrace the role of nurturers, they do more than provide; they inspire and guide the next generation. Their presence teaches children compassion, responsibility, and perseverance.”
Minister Hippolyte further stated, “In a world that often prioritizes toughness, caring fathers illustrate that true strength lies in empathy and love. They teach us that nurturing is defined by commitment, ensuring children feel secure, valued, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.”
Minister Hippolyte emphasized that the stories of many diligent and responsible men often remain untold. He stressed the need for Saint Lucia to confront the challenges facing boys and men, and to commit to meaningful actions that strengthen families and communities.
The Fathers Who Care Campaign will implement a series of activities and outreach programs designed to encourage men to take an active role in their children’s lives. This initiative aims to promote stronger families, healthier communities, and a brighter future for the nation.
