Taxi Blues: Executive Members at Loggerheads Over Leadership Role

.

The Saint Lucia National Taxi Association, also known as the National Taxi Union (NTU), is currently embroiled in turmoil following the recent resignations of its Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Vice-President.

The SLNTA is facing significant internal instability as these two executive members have expressed growing concerns over leadership. Their departures raise issues regarding President Terry Valcin’s management, signaling potential governance challenges within the union.

These successive resignations suggest deeper systemic problems that may impact operational cohesion and public trust.

Without stable leadership, the association may struggle to effectively represent its drivers, particularly during critical policy or regulatory discussions. The leadership crisis within the union intensified as Public Relations Officer David “Shakes” Christopher and Vice-President Isidore Brisefert both resigned, citing a complete loss of confidence in NTU President Terry Valcin.

The resignations underscore a serious internal rift:

– PRO Resignation: David Christopher resigned on May 26, 2026, citing a breakdown in transparency, accountability, and unity under Valcin’s leadership.
– Vice-President Resignation: Isidore Brisefert stepped down on May 27, 2026, highlighting a lack of consultation and collective decision-making within the NTU executive.
– Broader Union Tensions: The fallout became public following a dispute over transportation for the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival. President Valcin has accused Christopher of unethical behavior and competing with the union, while Christopher and Brisefert have criticized Valcin’s administrative direction.

As the situation evolves, several critical issues are emerging. The union is grappling with overlapping pressures, including ongoing tensions surrounding the entry of Uber into the Saint Lucian market, which increases the urgency for stable leadership.

No formal interim appointments or restructuring plans have been announced so far, indicating that the union may still be in a consultation phase following these resignations.

At the core of the issue is the vocal lack of confidence in President Valcin’s leadership. Therefore, any path to stability will likely need to address governance concerns—be it through policy changes within the union or a leadership transition.

President Valcin has stated that he will formally address the crisis and other pressing issues, such as the introduction of new ride-sharing apps, in an upcoming all-member meeting.
