In a strongly-worded missive , the National Workers Union (NWU) is demanding that the government conduct an urgent review of the current policy governing the issuance of Driver’s Licenses and its associated back payment requirements.
In a letter addressed to Senior Minister Stephenson King, the NWU is calling for economic relief for Saint Lucians impacted by the existing Driver’s License policy. The Union highlights a critical issue regarding the requirement for citizens to pay Driver’s License fees for periods during which they were outside of Saint Lucia.
The NWU states, “Individuals who have been away from Saint Lucia for legitimate reasons—such as education, health matters, or employment opportunities—are being unfairly charged for the entire period of their absence.”
The NWU emphasizes, “As the representative voice for workers and citizens, we assert that this policy places an undue financial burden on hardworking individuals. Many citizens travel abroad seeking better opportunities and personal development, which ultimately benefits our national economy.”
The statement further insists, “We believe it is essential to protect and strengthen the economic foundation of our people. Forcing returning nationals and residents to pay accumulated driver’s license fees for periods when they were unable to reside or operate vehicles in Saint Lucia is outright punitive.”
In light of these concerns, the NWU declares, “Citizens should not be penalized for circumstances beyond their control. We urge the Government of Saint Lucia to urgently reassess this policy. Consideration must be given to creating a fair and reasonable framework that acknowledges prolonged absences from the state and absolves affected individuals from obligatory fees during their time away. The National Workers Union is committed to advocating for just, equitable policies that prioritize the social and economic well-being of all citizens.”
