Not Your Business… But Read This.

Sometimes it’s the smallest green fig in the pot that makes the whole food taste nice.

So, tell me something… why is government business so difficult?

Oui, tell me.

Now I know some of you reading this are wondering, “What exactly is she trying to say?”

Well, I didn’t say anything. So, mind your business. Let them do their work.

But seriously…

What is going on in Saint Lucia?

Because lately, it feels like we’re talking about the same things over and over again—crime, young men, opportunity, cost of living, frustration, disappointment… and then next week, we’re talking about it again.

Like a pot that’s boiling but never cooking.

Let’s mind our business properly now.

Every time something happens — especially when crime hits the headlines — the same picture appears: a young man.

Somebody’s son. Somebody’s brother. Somebody who once sat in a classroom with big dreams and small shoes.

So where exactly are we losing them?

Is it after CSEC?
Is it when jobs are not calling back?
Is it when “links” matter more than qualifications?
Is it when frustration starts to feel louder than hope?

Nobody wakes up and says, “Today I will ruin my life.”
So something must be happening in between.

Saint Lucians can talk. Lawd, we can talk.

On the block.
On Facebook.
In the taxi.
On the radio.

Everybody has a solution.

But are we listening to the young men themselves?

Have we asked them:

  • What do you need?
  • What are you struggling with?
  • What would actually help?

Or are we just diagnosing the problem from outside the house?

Look how the country lights up when sports is commanding the attention of the nation and particularly the young people.

When regional tournaments come around, when opportunities open through leagues like the Caribbean Premier League, we celebrate talent. We rally behind potential.

But what about the talented young man who is not a cricketer?
The one good with his hands?
The one who could fix engines, wire a house, build furniture, and design graphics?

Are we giving those skills the same spotlight?

Not every young man needs a mic or a stadium.

Some just need a chance.

Under Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, policies talk about growth, opportunity and development. And that is important.

But policies on paper and opportunities on the ground sometimes feel like two different islands.

So, who is responsible?

Government?
Parents?
Schools?
Private sector?
Community leaders?

Maybe all of us.

Because if the smallest green fig can change the taste of the whole pot…

Imagine what a supported young man could do for an entire country.

So Yes… It Is Your Business.

Earlier, I told you to mind your business.

But this is your business.

Crime affects your safety.
Unemployment affects your economy.
Lost youth affects your future.

Saint Lucia is small. When one part hurts, the whole body limps.

So, the real question is not just what is going on.

The real question is:

Are we going to keep talking about it…

Or are we finally going to cook the pot properly?
