A 62-year-old woman, Monica Calixte, died Saturday after being struck by a vehicle on the Vide Bouteille Highway.
According to police, at about 8:00 p.m., the police Traffic Department in Castries received a report of a vehicular collision involving a pickup van and a pedestrian along the Vide Bouteille Highway.
“At the scene, investigators observed personnel from the Saint Lucia Fire Service administering aid to the sole occupant of the motor pickup. An ambulance conveyed a female pedestrian involved in the collision to the Owen King European Union (OKEU) Hospital with serious injuries. She was later pronounced dead,” a police statement read, confirming that Calixte had been identified as the victim.
This is not the first time an incident like this has occurred. In fact, many individuals cross the often-busy street, opting not to use the walkover. In the end, for some, (like Calixte), the consequences were dire.
In February of this year, a sixty-year-old pedestrian died after he was struck by a vehicle in that same area.
The incident reportedly occurred around 9:15 p.m.
“The Traffic Department in Castries commenced investigations into a report of a fatal vehicular collision involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle, which occurred near the intersection of the Vide Bouteille Highway and the Bisee junction,” the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) said shortly after the incident occurred.
The victim was identified as Carol Alphonse.
The previous year Richardson Charles died in a similar manner after crossing the Choc Roundabout. Charles was making his way home at the time when tragedy struck, according to reports.
But despite these gruesome outcomes many individuals still dash across the highway, merely hoping they won’t suffer the same fate.
The Gov needs to erect crossovers in these areas. Additionally, cops need to do more to stop drivers and riders driving poorly or dangerously. Come of Lucian, do your part.
Did you read the story? There are walkovers all over the highway. She opted not to use it.
