The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) will host its inaugural NEMO Day on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at its Secretariat in Bisee, from 10:00 am to 3:00pm, under the theme “NEMO: More than you know” and the tagline “Discover our people, our purpose, our work.”

The event will showcase NEMO’s diverse responsibilities and the partnerships that support disaster preparedness, response and recovery in Saint Lucia. This initiative follows a public awareness survey conducted to inform NEMO’s Communications Plan, which identified gaps in public understanding of the organisation’s mandate and functions.

NEMO Day will provide an opportunity to build that understanding through direct engagement with staff, displays and practical demonstrations. Visitors will get a closer look at equipment, skills and technology used in disaster management through live demonstrations of chainsaw use, emergency radio operations and NEMO’s search and rescue drone. They will also learn how schools, government agencies, volunteers and communities contribute to national preparedness.

The event coincides with World Tsunami Awareness Day, placing additional emphasis on tsunami awareness and evacuation preparedness. Saint Lucia’s experience in strengthening community and school preparedness will form part of the day’s focus.

Happy Tots Preschool, recognised by NEMO as the first preschool to establish its tsunami and evacuation protocols, has been invited to share its experience. Its example highlights the contribution that early childhood institutions can make to build a culture of preparedness.

Schools and government agencies are being invited to attend, alongside members of the public. For students, the event offers an opportunity to connect classroom learning with practical preparedness and explore how they can help their families and school communities stay safe.
