JA Saint Lucia Celebrated for Resilience and Program Revival

JA Saint Lucia proudly announced its recognition at the recent JA Americas Leadership Summit in Argentina, in honour of its successful mobilization of the private sector to support the reintroduction of Junior Achievement in Saint Lucia.

This accolade marked a significant milestone for Junior Achievement Saint Lucia and the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, showcasing a collaborative commitment to youth development.

The resurgence of Junior Achievement reflects a vital component of the Chamber’s youth-focused initiatives since 1996. For nearly three decades, the Chamber has championed the importance of equipping young people with practical skills in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, leadership, and the world of work.

Chamber Executive Director Brian Louisy reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to the program, acknowledging the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted JA activities for several years.

“While the pandemic presented significant interruptions, we were determined that it would not mark the end of Junior Achievement in Saint Lucia,” he stated. “The Chamber remained steadfast in finding ways to revive the program, collaborating closely with our members to gather the necessary support and resources for its return.”

Central to these efforts was Ms. Cheryl Renwick, Director of JA Saint Lucia and the Chamber of Commerce. Her vision for the Jump Start Initiative served as the catalyst for renewed action and translated the Chamber’s commitment to restoring JA into a practical initiative that attracted private-sector investment.

Ms. Renwick’s unwavering determination and leadership advanced the Jump Start Initiative, creating pathways for businesses to invest in JA and support its revival. As a result, Chamber members provided crucial initial funding, reinforcing their confidence in the value of youth-centered programs and the importance of connecting young people with the business community.

Special thanks were extended to St. Lucia Linen, Real Foods Inc., Renwick & Company, Heineken Saint Lucia, Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC), and the Saint Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for their commitment to the resurgence of Junior Achievement Saint Lucia. This initial investment is already believed to be yielding tangible results.

The Chamber views the return of Junior Achievement as a testament to its long-standing dedication to strengthening youth-based programs, recognizing that investing in young people is pivotal for Saint Lucia’s future economic and social development. This successful reintroduction, the Chamber says, demonstrates the potential for collective action when business leaders, educators, youth-development advocates, and other stakeholders unite around a common purpose.

The Chamber also continues to operate the St Lucia Youth Business Trust alongside Junior Achievement Saint Lucia. The recognition at the JA Americas Leadership Summit carries significance that extends beyond the program, acknowledging the collective effort to rebuild Junior Achievement in Saint Lucia.

As the Chamber looks towards the future, it aims to build on this momentum and further strengthen its youth-focused initiatives. The return of Junior Achievement signifies a renewed commitment to a vision established in 1996, now revitalized for a new generation and propelled by the determination to overcome the challenges posed by COVID-19.
