Security on High Alert for Triple Murder Trial

.

Security measures are on high alert for the trial of three suspects charged with the alleged triple murder of Samantha Eugene, Constant Thomas, and Elisha Thomas, whose bodies were discovered at La Toc Road, Castries, in February 2022.

Court proceedings began this week at the High Court, focusing on the killings that occurred approximately four years ago. Marvin Gabriel and Junior Herman were charged in October 2022, while Shem Bennett was arrested and charged in August 2023 in connection with the same case.
All suspects are currently remanded at the Bordelais Correctional Facility and are appearing in the Saint Lucia High Court (Criminal Division) for the ongoing trial.

The defense attorneys for the accused are:

Lorne Theophilus: Representing Marvin Gabriel (also known as “Burn Head”).

Jadia Jn. Pierre-Emmanuel: Representing co-defendant Shem Bennett.

Junior Herman’s defense is being handled under a separate legal aid assignment

Given the interconnected nature of the trials, the lawyers have coordinated during joint court management fixtures, including sufficiency hearings and omnibus conferences. In an unprecedented move for the nation’s judicial system, law enforcement officers from the Royal Saint Lucia Police have implemented heightened security measures throughout the trial. The case is one of the most closely monitored murder trial in Saint Lucia, prompting extraordinary security protocols.

Jurors, who have been sequestered for the trial, are being transported by a heavily guarded vehicle with secure access to the courthouse. Authorities have also established measures to protect jurors’ identities from public exposure.

Security has been significantly strengthened, with heavily armed officers from the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force’s Special Services Unit (SSU) stationed throughout the proceedings to ensure the safety of jurors, court officials, and all parties involved.

The lead investigating officers are Constable 859 Quincy Fevriere and PC 846 Murgaran Shoulette, who are formally listed on the High Court indictments as the main complainants overseeing the evidence related to the charges of causing death and gang-related activity.

The Crown’s prosecution team, directed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of Saint Lucia, typically includes the Director of Public Prosecutions or a designated Senior Crown Counsel, alongside the Major Crime Unit. This team collaborates directly with Constable Fevriere and PC Shoulette to process forensic evidence, secure eyewitness testimonies, and build a prima facie case linked to gang activity.

As the trial progresses, the prosecution will continue to present its case against the three accused.
