A New Era for Genetic Testing and Advanced Diagnostics in Saint Lucia

.

CariGenetics Saint Lucia and Lab Services & Consultations Ltd. have announced a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening access to genetic testing, advanced cancer diagnostics, sequencing services, and precision health solutions in Saint Lucia and the wider OECS region.

The partnership brings together Lab Services’ established laboratory infrastructure and CariGenetics’ expertise in genomics. Together, the organisations aim to build local capacity in advanced diagnostics and sequencing, while creating a foundation for wider regional access.

A major focus of the collaboration is cancer diagnostics. Through access to tumour genetics testing and immunohistochemistry, clinicians will be better supported in understanding the biological characteristics of cancers and making more informed decisions around diagnosis, treatment planning, and referral pathways. This is especially important as cancer continues to place a significant burden on patients, families, and healthcare systems across the Caribbean.

“Immunohistochemistry and cancer tumour genetics is the difference between giving a patient generalized treatment and providing truly personalized, effective medicine”. Dr. Stephen King, Laboratory Director, Lab Services.

The partnership will also expand access to genetic testing services that support more personalised and preventative healthcare. This includes testing that can inform medication response, inherited risk, wellness insights, and other areas where genetics can help individuals and clinicians make more informed health decisions.

Beyond clinical care, sequencing capacity creates new opportunities for Saint Lucia in public health, research, and biodiversity protection. It can support the monitoring of emerging pathogens, strengthen pandemic preparedness, track antimicrobial resistance, and generate genomic data to guide health decision-making. It also opens the door to building reference genomes for regional wildlife, monitoring ecosystems, and using the data collected to better protect the island’s natural resources.

While the initial implementation will be based in Saint Lucia, both organisations view this partnership as part of a broader regional effort. The long-term vision is to support a coordinated OECS approach to genetic testing, cancer diagnostics, sequencing, and advanced laboratory services, allowing Member States to benefit from shared infrastructure, technical expertise, and regional sample processing capacity.

“What we are witnessing is more than the shaping of a business partnership. It is an act of intellectual sovereignty — a declaration that the Eastern Caribbean has the ambition, the talent, and now the infrastructure to participate meaningfully in the future of medicine.” Dr. Didacus Jules, OECS Director General.

The partnership also reflects a wider need for Caribbean participation in genomics and precision medicine. For too long, Caribbean populations have been underrepresented in global genetic research, limiting the relevance of tools and insights developed elsewhere. Building local and regional capacity helps ensure that genetic testing, sequencing, and advanced diagnostics are shaped by the needs of Caribbean people and health systems.

“The aim of this partnership therefore is not only to introduce new testing services, but to ensure that they are properly connected to clinical care.” Devy Frederick, CEO, CariGenetics St. Lucia.

As these services are introduced and expanded, both organisations will continue to work with key partners to ensure the initiative supports Saint Lucia’s national priorities and the wider regional vision for genomic capacity. This partnership marks a significant step in building Saint Lucia’s role as a regional hub for genomics, advanced diagnostics, and Caribbean-led scientific innovation.
