The locally based Mexican Embassy has responded to concerns of safety at the upcoming World Cup scheduled to be jointly hosted by Canada, The US and Mexico from June 11th to July 19th, 2026.

The response emanated from concern about an international story that hit newsstands last week.

“Regarding the note by Al-Jazeera you printed last week titled ‘World Cup 2026: Will Violence and Protests Test Mexico’s Cohost Status?’ which lists some concerns regarding security during the upcoming World Cup that will be cohosted by Mexico next June, I am pleased to share that the Mexican Government began planning the security operation for the event eight years ago, when it signed guarantees with FIFA to develop a detailed security concept that includes every procedure and measure necessary to ensure the highest security as relates to the matches and surrounding events.

As a result, the Mexican Government has put in operation a specific security strategy for the World Cup: the “Plan Kukulcan.” Its objective is to prevent risks, respond to emergencies, and protect the population as well as our visitors. The strategy involves coordination between local, state and federal authorities, deployment of 100,000 police, military, and private security personnel, as well as technological solutions, and prevention protocols.

Mexico is not new to large sports events, having hosted the 1968 Olympics, the second Women’s World Cup in 1971, the 1970 Men’s FIFA World Cup, in which the great Pelé was crowned with glory, as well as in 1986, when Maradonna took Argentina to victory, surrounded by “the Mexican wave” which was seen for the first time in a World Cup stadium. More recently, since 2015 we have hosted the Mexico City Formula 1 Grand Prix and were selected the “Best Grand Prix” for five consecutive years. Mexico has always been recognized as a caring and warm host, that pays particular attention to detail in the organization of major events.

Mexico is prepared to welcome the teams, fans, and visitors, and to guarantee the best World Cup yet, with fun and fiesta!”
