Hard Core Jazz at its Best: Featuring Billy and Marsalis

Saint Lucia’s rising star Jesse Billy and his talented crew delivered a captivating fusion of jazzy melodies infused with a rhythmic tropical flair, setting the vibrant tone for Thursday night’s Pure Jazz session at the 2026 Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival.

Held at The Pavilion on The Ramp in Rodney Bay, the evening also showcased the acclaimed Branford Marsalis Quartet. The festival continued to impress with its dynamic showcase of music and art.

Jesse Billy, a versatile singer-songwriter and pianist, captivated the audience with a unique blend of jazz excellence and authentic Caribbean soul.

During his presentation, “Echoes – Fusion of Arts,” Billy performed original pieces, including the uplifting track “Cry of a Note,” characterized by its layered complexity and harmonious crescendo. He also treated the audience to a soulful cover of Luther Francois’ “Castries Underground,” which he fondly recalled was recorded live at Mohitos Bar in Gros Islet.

Meanwhile, Marsalis and his band delivered a masterful performance, capturing the essence of hardcore jazz through diverse rhythms and influences, including echoes of 1920s funk and rhythm and blues, seamlessly woven into smooth and mellow grooves.

The creative energy of the evening was further amplified by a powerful thirty-minute drumming presentation by Lapo Cabwit and Genesis, whose immersive showcase of rhythm, movement, and cultural storytelling reinforced the festival’s unique blend of music and arts.

Thaddeus M. Antoine, Chairman of the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival, expressed his pride in the evening’s celebration of diversity, creativity, and cultural expression.

“Now four nights into its mainstage program, the festival not only delivers unforgettable cultural moments but also aligns with its vision of excellence, driving significant economic impact through tourism, visitor arrivals, and opportunities for local creatives and businesses,” he stated.

He added, “Each stage truly reflects the festival’s spirit: sophisticated, vibrant, and deeply rooted in our culture.”

The excitement continued on Friday, May 9, with Caribbean Fusion featuring a Saint Lucian mélange led by Imran Nerdy, followed by performances from Skip Marley and The Wailers, and headlined by dancehall sensation Dexta Daps and Soca powerhouse Kes.

Today (Saturday), Grammy Award-winning Nigerian superstar Tems is set to take the stage at World Beats, bringing her signature blend of Afrobeat, R&B, and soulful contemporary sounds to the festival. Known for her powerful vocals and international hits, Tems promises an energetic performance celebrating the global influence of African music.

Saturday’s lineup will also feature a vibrant French Creole fusion, celebrating the cultural sounds and influences of artists from Saint Lucia, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.

The festival will culminate on May 10 with The Ultimate Celebration – headlined by iconic R&B legends Brandy and Monica, along with Grammy Award-winning artist Billy Ocean. Renowned for their timeless hits and powerhouse vocals, the closing event promises a nostalgic yet electrifying showcase of global music excellence.

The Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival continues to stand as one of the Caribbean’s premier cultural events, blending music, art, cuisine, and Saint Lucian hospitality into an unforgettable experience for patrons worldwide.
