Aligning Education with Industry

John Paul Estephane, Minister in the Ministry of Tourism and Commerce, is taking decisive action to establish a stronger connection between school curricula and the manufacturing sector, addressing the critical skills gap.

After engaging with local industry leaders, the Ministry is prioritizing three key initiatives:

– Real-Time Data: Implementing a National Skills Register to accurately monitor labor needs.
– Targeted Training: Revamping education to produce “job-ready” technical talent.
– Public-Private Partnership: Collaborating with manufacturers to guarantee that students graduate equipped with in-demand skills.

The objective is a seamless transition from education to employment that drives both job creation and industrial growth.

Expanding on this initiative, Minister Estephane stated, “Our discussions reveal that we are failing to produce enough skilled individuals to meet manufacturers’ needs.”

He continued, “Greater collaboration between the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Education, Youth Development and Sports is imperative to ensure we are equipping young people with the necessary skills for the industry.”

Minister Estephane underscored the pressing demand for skilled workers in Saint Lucia’s manufacturing sector, acknowledging, “We are currently facing a significant shortage in this area.”

Moreover, he pointed out that certain technical skill sets are lacking. “Developing a comprehensive database will enable the ministry to identify available talent, facilitating their employment in the manufacturing and private sectors.”

He confidently asserted that the mandate is clear: “Our goal is to ensure the economic empowerment of individuals.”
