Soufriere SPFL Semifinals | A nation Watching

The St. Lucia Semi Professional Football League (SPFL) is into its semifinal round with two matches that promises to bring out the best of local football at the Soufriere Mini Stadium.

.

A large crowd is expected to be in attendance tonight to witness football action that will feature Vieux Fort South, defending champions La Clery, Canaries and Gros Islet.

In the night’s first at 7pm Vieux Fort South will have to beat Gros Islet if they are to make it to the finals but that will not be easy as the Gros Islet team has grown increasingly difficult to beat. The 9pm match puts La Clery up against a resilient Canaries team which endured a dogfight with Mabouya Valley to win 3-2, knocking Central Castries out of fourth place, to make the semifinal round.

Gros Islet and La Clery, only Tuesday, played to a 1-1 draw in what seemingly was a warmup for their individual semifinal matches. Both teams tempered their style of play on Tuesday as both had already qualified so they really had nothing to play for except match fitness.

.

Gros Islet and La Clery were semifinalist last year while Vieux Fort South are recently promoted.

Central Castries, who were knocked out of fourth place, were losing finalist against La Clery in last year’s competition.

.

Many are suggesting that this year’s competition will end with a new winner, but La Clery is adamant they will repeat last year’s feat and take the top prize home again.
