The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) decisively reclaimed governance of the country, delivering a stunning defeat to the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) in the December 1, general elections.
This election was marked by a powerful ‘red wave’ that swept across the nation, fuelled by vibrant energy and dynamic celebrations, showcasing the SLP’s commitment to excellence.
Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has successfully secured his second consecutive term, signalling a strong mandate for advancing the holistic and socioeconomic development of Saint Lucia.
The SLP won an impressive 14 out of 15 contested seats, with two independent candidates joining their ranks, while the UWP managed to secure only one seat.
Political analysts recognize Pierre’s strategic decision to call for ‘steely snap elections’—a mere 21-day campaign in November—as a calculated move that left the UWP at a loss for an effective response. Their attempts to criticize the SLP’s management of national affairs fell flat and lacked impact.
In contrast, the SLP garnered tremendous support, and as Election Day approached, the streets came alive with enthusiasm.
On election night, even prior to the final vote tally and official announcements, SLP supporters flooded the streets in jubilant celebration. The atmosphere in Gros Islet was electric, with throngs of people donned in red shirts, hats, flags, and more, dancing to infectious music.
As convoys made their way to the Bay Area, the music truck blared with SLP-themed party songs. Thousands gathered near the jetty area, where MP Kenson “Bay Bay” Casimir emerged atop the music truck to revel in the success achieved through overwhelming support.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his constituents for his significant victory over UWP’s Marcella Johnson by more than 4,000 votes—the best margin for a Gros Islet MP in recent elections.
As the early dawn broke out with some ‘showers of blessing’, the crowd dispersed after experiencing a night of triumph.
Reports indicate the celebratory mood electrified through the neighbouring Babonneau constituency and echoed throughout the island, with chants ringing in favour of the SLP.
PM Pierre solidified his influence in the Castries East constituency, securing over 4,000 votes and demonstrating the SLP’s dominance as candidates in the Castries zone swept their contests convincingly.
The SLP has made it clear: their administration is committed to continuing vital work projects focused on socioeconomic development and the overall welfare of the population. PM Pierre states unequivocally, “We are here to generate wealth creation for the state.”
In an online post, PM Pierre succinctly declared, “Thank You, Saint Lucia!”
The electoral consensus is loud and clear: Moving Forward Together – The Choice Is Clear. We are sticking with PJP.
Meanwhile, in an online post , former MP for Choisuel Bradley Felix thanked his “family and friends of Choiseul-Saltibus and well wishers… The results did not go as expected but has been accepted. I know many are saddened and heartbroken but I firmly believe in the saying everything happens for a reason.”
He added, “ My love for the constituency and constituents run deep and steadfast… This is not the time to point fingers or lay blame but to unite and demand the best for our constituency.”
