In a significant turn of events following the December 1 General Elections, Allen Chastanet has officially resigned as the political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP).

This decision comes after an overwhelming defeat, with the UWP securing a disappointing 14-1 result. Chastanet’s resignation was formal, indicating a clear and planned transition of leadership. The UWP is now at a critical juncture as it determines its future steps.

Further insights into the reasons behind this defeat and the shakeup within the party are expected in upcoming reports and analyses.

According to reports, Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet has formally submitted his resignation following the UWP’s dismal performance in the 2025 General Election. The party managed to win only Chastanet’s seat in Micoud South, while the Saint Lucia Labour Party claimed 14 seats, with two seats going to independent candidates aligned with the government.

A UWP source confirmed Chastanet’s resignation in a December 5 press release, stating, “During the course of the [strategic] meeting, the Chairman of the United Workers Party, Mr. Therold Prudent, formally announced that he received a letter from Political Leader Allen Chastanet, in which Mr. Chastanet tends to resign as Political Leader of the United Workers Party. This resignation will be formally presented for consideration by the National Executive at its scheduled meeting in the second week of December 2025.

The release adds , “The United Workers Party remains firmly committed to transparency, democratic processes, and the advancement of its mission in service to the people of Saint Lucia.”

Political observers have unequivocally placed the blame for the party’s performance on Chastanet, highlighting that this marks his second consecutive landslide loss as leader, following a similar defeat in 2021.

Chastanet has led the party for 12 years.

Up to press time, The Voice had not received an official copy of the resignation document , and was unable to contact any of the UWP’s officials on this matter.
