Riviere Mitant Celebrates Opening of New Multi-Purpose Court

Last Saturday, residents of the Riviere Mitant community in Monchy gathered to celebrate the official opening of their newly constructed multi-purpose court, a significant investment in local sports facilities, championed by Minister for Youth Development and Sports, Kenson Casimir.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Minister Casimir, was attended by Sports Director Clivus Jules, Sports Officer for Gros Islet David Moise, staff from the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports (MYDS), and members of the Riviere Mitant Interim Committee, headed by Nye Hippolyte.

Master of Ceremonies Zackary Hippolyte kept the atmosphere lively and engaging throughout the event.

A standout moment occurred when 11-year-old Isaiah Auguste, a Grade 5 student at Monchy Primary School, assisted Minister Casimir in cutting the ribbon, officially inaugurating the facility.

During his address, Minister Casimir highlighted the crucial role that community sports facilities play in youth development and expressed pride in the court’s opening.

He noted the extensive renovations made to the previous court, stating, “This is built to last. We have made a strong start. While it may not be perfect, it is significantly improved.”

The minister committed to ongoing enhancements to the facility, revealing plans for new LED lighting and seating arrangements to accommodate spectators during events.

“We are determined to create a welcoming environment for community members and visitors to enjoy various sporting events,” he affirmed.

Minister Casimir emphasized his commitment to ensuring that communities like Riviere Mitant are prioritized : “This court is a symbol of progress for our area. I will tirelessly work to provide Gros Islet with facilities that inspire youth, strengthen families, and foster pride in our community.”

To celebrate the court’s opening, a small goal football festival featured five competing teams.

At the end of the competition

– The Black Team, led by Trevonne Sexius, emerged victorious, earning $600.
– The Real Team, captained by Kiwayne John, secured second place with a prize of $500.
– The Green Team, led by Mitchell Eugene, claimed third and received $400.
– The Fuscha Team, captained by Garvin Henry, finished fourth, earning $250.
– The Orange Team, led by Yannick Hippolyte, also received $250 for fifth place.

In addition to cash prizes, top teams were awarded footballs, football boots, and basketballs to further promote sporting activity in the community.

Throughout the ceremony, Minister Casimir reiterated his dedication to providing safe, modern, and inspiring spaces for sports and recreation throughout Gros Islet and across Saint Lucia.

He affirmed that the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports will continue to prioritize projects that empower youth, strengthen community ties, and build a foundation for future sporting excellence.
