The Taiwanese Technical Mission, in collaboration with the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA), is successfully cultivating a new era of sustainability at the Bordelais Correctional Facility.

This initiative goes beyond merely growing food – it is actively transforming waste into valuable resources.

Recently, SLSWMA’s Landfill Supervisor, Davis Poleon, conducted an engaging and practical composting training session for inmates involved in the facility’s farming project. This training provided them with critical skills needed to create effective compost heaps, demonstrating how organic waste from food scraps and yard trimmings can be converted into nutrient-rich soil for agricultural use.

By empowering inmates to recycle waste through composting, the project not only significantly reduces the facility’s environmental footprint but also enhances the sustainability of the farming initiative.

This process leads to improved soil health, increased crop production, and a more eco-friendly approach to agriculture at Bordelais.

The partnership between SLSWMA and the Taiwanese Technical Mission stands as a powerful testament to how education and collaboration can drive long-lasting environmental and social change, benefitting both the prison community and the broader Saint Lucian society.
