The release adds , “We urge all citizens to prioritize their safety, adhere to official advisories, and remain in contact with our Honorary Consul, Mr. Vitus Evans, for any required assistance. We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and People of Haiti for the lives lost due to this system.
“The Caribbean family stands united in adversity, and we are committed to supporting one another as we face this challenge head-on.”
Additionally, the Government has implemented strong measures to guarantee the safety and well-being of Saint Lucian students currently studying in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa approaches.
Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre and Minister of Education Shawn Edward are in direct communication with Saint Lucia’s Honorary Council to Jamaica and representatives of the twenty-two (22) Saint Lucian students pursuing their studies in Jamaica across various academic programs.
In preparation for the storm, the Government has made hotel accommodations available to all students who wish to relocate to safer locations. Some students have taken advantage of this arrangement, while others have opted to stay with relatives, friends, or on university campuses that local authorities have confirmed to be structurally secure.
“These decisive actions reflect the Government’s commitment to ensuring the safekeeping of Saint Lucian students during this critical period,” the statement continues. “The Ministry maintains open lines of communication with all students to guarantee their safety, keeping them informed and supported throughout the storm’s duration. Regular updates are exchanged to monitor their welfare and provide necessary assistance.
Minister Shawn Edward has reassured the families of these students, stating, “The Government of Saint Lucia is steadfast in its commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, wherever they may be. We understand the concerns families may have at this time, and we assure them that every effort is being made to ensure their children remain safe and supported.
“We are in close contact with our students in Jamaica and will continue to monitor their situation vigilantly as Hurricane Melissa passes. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the people of Jamaica and all those across the region impacted by this storm.”
The Ministry of Education remains resolute in standing with the Government and people of Jamaica during this challenging time. Saint Lucia joins the region in sending thoughts and prayers for the safety and protection of everyone in the hurricane’s path.
