The spate of reported killings on the island have touched every facet of St. Lucian community, that includes the religious community and one such group has decided to address the issue.
Archbishop Gabriel Malzaire issued a statement this week expressing his “deep sadness and concern” as he reflected on the reported multiple homicides over the past few days.
He says these acts of violence must prompt citizens to examine the state of the country and its values, a country that is considered a Christian community.
The archbishop called on St. Lucians to condemn these brutal acts vehemently.
He believes that at the same time, there needs to be recognition for the need for collective responsibility in addressing the decadence of civility in our society, which seems to be losing its moral compass.
“As a Christian community,” he says, “we pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and for the consolation of their families in their pain and loss.”
Archbishop went on to say that there must also be prayer for an increase in the human attributes that prevent senseless acts of crime and violence. Such named attributes include proper parental guidance, good family life, respect for one another, love for the common good, a basic fear of God, and the denunciation of every form of evil
In the light of the situation, I call has gone out for all Christians and people of good will to join in a day of fast and prayer for the nation on Friday, July 11, 2025.
