In a momentous celebration of Saint Lucia’s first-ever Olympic Gold Medal (100) victory, local authorities are launching grand festivities to mark Julien Alfred Day.

This event will immortalize the August 3, 2024, anniversary of Alfred’s remarkable achievements in Paris, where she also earned a Silver Medal in the 200m.

A major athletic meet is set for the Soufriere Mini Stadium, uniting participants from various constituencies across the island.

“We have established an Organising Committee dedicated to the celebration of Julien Alfred Day and are actively developing numerous exciting initiatives,” announced Sports Minister Kenson Casimir at a recent media briefing.

The centerpiece of this celebration will be the District Athletic Meet, featuring athletes from every corner of the country.

Casimir stated, “We will consistently observe ‘Julien Alfred Day’ on the Sunday following August 3, the day she secured her historic Gold Medal.”

He further emphasized, “This Sunday will serve as a tribute to her exceptional achievements in sports, with athletics (track and field) as the focal point.”

The meet will showcase teams representing their respective districts, culminating in the crowning of an overall winner, while celebrating Julien Alfred’s remarkable accomplishments.

The minister underscored the seriousness of the event, stating, “While we expect participants to compete earnestly, it will also be a Fun Day.”

An Over-50 event will be incorporated to recognize the ‘fastest veteran’ athlete, ultimately determining the fastest competitor in the male, female, and juvenile divisions.

With a firm commitment to a “zero politics” theme, Casimir expressed anticipation for a vibrant turnout, urging everyone to don their “national colours” as they gather at the Soufriere Mini Stadium to celebrate Julien Alfred.
