Health Ministry Issues Advisory on Newly Categorized SARS-CoV-2 Variant Under Monitoring

.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs wishes to inform the public of a recent update issued by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) regarding the SARS-CoV-2 variant NB.1.8.1, which has been newly categorized as a “variant under monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO) as of May 23, 2025.

This classification signals that the variant is being closely observed to evaluate its characteristics and potential risks to health systems. According to the WHO, between April 14 and May 11, 2025, over 91,583 COVID-19 cases were reported across 91 countries, marking a threefold increase globally. The NB.1.8.1 variant has been detected in 22 countries, including those in Europe, Asia, and North America, with increased transmission and higher hospitalizations being observed.

While surveillance efforts continue to gather more detailed data, preliminary evidence suggests that NB.1.8.1 does not lead to more severe illness than current circulating variants. However, it is believed to be more transmissible, meaning it spreads more easily from person to person. At this time, the global and regional public health risk remains low, but continued vigilance is advised.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, emphasized the importance of proactive health practices at the community level. “Although NB.1.8.1 is still being studied, we encourage the public to maintain strong hygiene and health practices. Frequent handwashing, staying away from social gatherings when sick, and wearing masks when experiencing flu-like symptoms are all important protective steps. The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation globally and regionally and has enhanced surveillance, testing, and public health communication measures to safeguard the population,” urged Dr. George.

The Ministry advises the public to adhere to the following preventive measures:

• Wash hands frequently or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

• Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms of illness.

• Refrain from attending social gatherings when experiencing respiratory symptoms.

• Seek medical attention for any flu-like symptoms.

• Consider wearing a face mask in public settings, especially if symptomatic.

• Maintain healthy habits to build immune resilience.
