After weeks of a thrilling contest – the Sandals/SLNCA Under-19 Cricket Tournament concluded with Gros Islet and Central Castries sharing the championship title.
On Sunday, at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground (DSCG), the match was called off just three balls short of an official result, roughly half an hour before the cutoff time.
Central Castries set a solid total of 179-5 in their 40 overs after being sent in to bat. Tyler Venner delivered a standout performance with 61 runs, supported by captain Theo Edward with 54 runs, and Aiden Scholar who contributed 30 runs.
For Gros Islet, Isaiah Jones and Darvin Forde emerged as the leading wicket-takers, claiming 2-17 and 2-40 respectively.
Defending champions Gros Islet were on track to defend their title while chasing a target of 180 runs. At 112-4 in the 20th over, they were ahead of the required run rate when rain abruptly interrupted the game and the umpires halted play after 19.3 overs.
Gros Islet’s innings began with a strong performance from Johnathan Daniel and Daniel Lorde, who forged a brisk 92-run opening partnership before Daniel was dismissed for 34 runs. Khan Elcock followed shortly after for four runs, while Lorde, the top scorer of the innings, fell for 43 runs off 54 balls, including four fours and a six.
Leon Alexander added 10 runs before the rain intervened. Aiden Scholar was Central Castries’ most effective bowler with 3-27 in six overs.
With the match already reduced to 40 overs per side, the 20-over minimum for an official result was not achieved. At around 5:30 p.m., officials summoned the captains and ruled the game a no-result.
