The future of tourism lies in creating “immersive and authentic local experiences” tailored for adventurous travellers.

So said Tourism Minister Dr. Ernest Hilaire who declared that the government is committed to enhancing local business productivity and fostering an environment conducive to foreign investment.

Tourism investment stakeholders are confident that the ongoing A’ILA Resort hotel project will significantly diversify Saint Lucia’s tourism offerings and boost local economic opportunities. The tourism minister emphasises that the resort will craft engaging experiences that will directly benefit Saint Lucians economically.

Set for completion by mid-summer, the I’ILA Resort hotel project at Mt Pimard, Reduit, is promoted as a “multi-concept development,” featuring health, well-being, commercial, and leisure offerings. This project includes a wellness centre by TheLifeCo, a blue zone centre with eco-conscious retail and grocery stores, a spa, and family-oriented and adults-only spaces, all designed with eco-friendly amenities.

“That’s what the new generation of traveler demands, and that’s why we are firmly championing Community Tourism,” asserted the minister.

He pointed to events like the ‘Kabawé Krawl’ and ‘Events Tourism’ as prime examples of the authentic experiences people seek. With this in mind, the government’s policy shifts towards promoting more “community-based experiences” over traditional resort-based options, encouraging guests to explore and engage with local communities.

“It is crucial for new-age properties to create experiences enabling guests to connect with the local population and enjoy the hospitality of Saint Lucians. Developers are committed to incorporating this element, providing numerous opportunities for meaningful interactions,” Hilaire said.

Candy Nicholas, Public Relations Representative for A’ila Resorts, confirmed that the 1300-room resort will be developed in phases on the site of the former Caribbean Jewel Seven Wonders project. “Though we aimed for an opening in the first quarter of this year, we are determined to ensure it opens by summer,” she stated.

The tourism minister is determined to see the realization of the Blue Zone Retail Center concept. “Invest Saint Lucia has engaged in substantial discussions with the developer, who has committed to integrating a retail center within the hotel, enabling Saint Lucian entrepreneurs and local artists to create a marketplace experience to reach a broader audience,” Dr. Hilaire remarked.

Minister Hilaire highlighted that unrelated projects like the Rodney Bay City Center, being constructed near the IGY Rodney Bay Marina, will enhance the Rodney Bay area, generating additional economic activity and opportunities for locals.

“This will bring tremendous economic opportunities for our people,” the minister asserted. “Invest Saint Lucia is pivotal as the investment agency in Saint Lucia, ensuring our citizens are prepared to capitalize on these emerging opportunities.”
