Saint Lucians must adopt water-saving measures to ensure sustainability and resilience. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Nutrition is leading the initiative to safeguard water resources as Saint Lucia transitions into the dry season, which spans from December 2024 to May 2025.
A ministry spokesperson stresses that individuals and communities must prioritise water security. This call to action emphasises the critical importance of efficient water management practices, essential not only for agricultural practices but also for the overall well-being of the nation.
Jason Ernest, the Director of Water Resources, insists on the necessity of preparation during this crucial period to mitigate potential negative impacts on consistent water availability.
“Just like the Hurricane season coincides with the wet season, we urge everyone to prepare,” said Ernest.
He further stated, “The Ministry will actively promote and encourage the expansion of the storage network across all sectors, including residential, commercial, and farming. Managing water distribution and developing storage solutions in every sector is imperative in building water resilience.”
The promotion of rainwater harvesting systems is crucial as a sustainable solution to combat water shortages.
Ernest highlights the importance of these systems, which allow for the collection and storage of rainwater for domestic use. This practice reduces households’ dependence on conventional water supplies during the driest months of the year.
“We strongly advise people to enhance their water storage capacity. This is not just advisable; it’s a necessary investment. In addition to storing potable water, rainwater harvesting should be adopted as an additional storage method,” he noted.
Ernest points out that while most household water activities do not require potable water, residents can make rainwater suitable for drinking.
In summary, he asserts that it is vital to implement water management practices that prioritize reduction, reuse, and recycling to guarantee a consistent supply for all needs.
Residents must recognize the importance of proper water management and take immediate action by repairing leaks, using water-saving devices, and conserving water in daily routines.
