THE newly refurbished Gros Islet Mini Stadium will come alive this weekend as Veterans in Sports (VIS) Inc. stages a two-day, 12-team Super Knockout event.
At a recent media launch, VIS personnel and key stakeholders emphasised a crucial aspect of this event: the fight against cancer. Since launching the ‘Kick for a Cure’ initiative five years ago, this programme has successfully established a powerful link between sports and healthy living.
“Sports is a Vehicle for Social Good,” VIS Inc. CEO Alvin Malaykhan firmly stated, adding that this season’s theme, “The Journey Continues,” highlights the transformative impact that the game has had on communities across the island.
Addressing the audience, Malaykhan declared, “This theme reflects our past achievements and our future ambitions. It speaks to the resilience, growth, and significant impact of our efforts over the past 13 years.”
In addition to launching the 11th edition of VIS Inc., the occasion also promoted the 5th ‘Kick for a Cure’ initiative.
Malaykhan emphasised the importance of “Honouring Caregivers,” stating, “This is not just a tagline—it’s a critical recognition of the silent warriors among us. Caregivers are the ‘unsung heroes’ in the battle against cancer and other life-altering illnesses.”
VIS Inc. champions the mandate of the ‘Saint Lucia Moves’ project, promoting “increased physical activity and healthy lifestyles through sports.” Malaykhan asserted that by integrating health and wellness into its mission, “We are committed to not only fostering physical fitness but also advocating for proactive health management.”
With approximately 300 players participating in this weekend’s soccer event, he urged everyone to take advantage of the Health Fair offering free medical services.
Reflecting on the past 13 years, Malaykhan highlighted the core values of “determination, community, and heart.”
Dr. Gennie Isaac-Louisy, District Medical Officer, reinforced the detrimental effects of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) on individuals and families. Through the Saint Lucia Moves initiative, she stressed the importance of healthy nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular physical exercise.
Dorothy Philip, President/Founder of Faces of Cancer, along with Blackheart Productions CEO David “Shakes” Christopher, were acknowledged as ‘unsung heroes’ for their contributions.
Philip underscored that the Health Fair is a key component of the Faces of Cancer agenda and has expanded significantly.
Christopher shared a powerful testimony of his personal battle with the disease, expressing his determination to overcome. He urged everyone to “do the tests” to ensure healthy living and prevent disease.
VIS Inc. Football Ambassador Earl “Ball Hog” Jean, a director of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), pointed out that the veterans’ soccer movement is more than just entertainment, it offers senior men an opportunity to engage in physical activity in their prime years.
He emphasised that unity and collaboration are crucial for achieving meaningful progress and stressed that many individuals in the community are capable of inspiring change and improving societal behaviours.
Matches kick off today at 4:00 p.m. and continue on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., featuring a Women All-Star exhibition match scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Organizers strongly encourage the public to donate to the ‘Kick for a Cure’ cause, as all contributions directly benefit efforts to assist less privileged individuals in the community.
