In response to recent laws designed to combat gender-based violence, the Do Nation Support Foundation Inc. has launched a powerful initiative to elevate and empower the status of young females on the island.
This initiative is a key component of the group’s ongoing Smart Worthy Ambitious Girls (SWAG) Project, proudly supported by funding from the French Government’s collaboration with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and technical assistance from Unite Caribbean.
On November 17, an impactful event took place at Anse Cochon Beach in Anse La Raye, facilitated by Ti Kaye Resorts, a cherished boutique vacation property in that community. The participants got involved in a series of activities promoting physical health, social interaction, and empowerment.
The SWAG project is committed to transforming the lives of young women and girls through strategic initiatives that foster personal growth, leadership skills, and community engagement across the island.
“We successfully organized an outdoor event for the SWAG project that drew 50 young girls and 20 dedicated volunteers from the Good Deeds Day team,” declared Diane Felicien, CEO and Founder of the Do Nation Foundation.
Highlighting the critical need to advocate against gender-based violence, Felicien emphasised that the activities-ranging from volleyball and snorkeling to fitness exercises-were all designed to enhance physical health, social skills, and build self-confidence.
In line with the ‘16 Days of Activism’ against gender-based violence, she stated that this initiative served to underscore “the vital importance of raising awareness about violence against women and girls.”
Felicien urged everyone to educate themselves on gender issues, their rights, and the recently passed laws. “It’s crucial to understand the services available and recognise the significance of mutual respect-both for oneself and others,” she said.
The rights of individuals from the LGBTQ community were also addressed, with Felicien calling for acceptance and an end to discrimination. She emphasised that increasing awareness of these issues is essential in reducing societal violence.
“Society must adopt a more understanding approach; doing so will lead to a decrease in violence if we commit to accepting, respecting, and understanding one another,” Felicien declared.
The SWAG project stands firm in its mission to empower young women through leadership and community engagement. The funding from the French agency will further underscore the essential role of international partnerships in advancing gender equality.
