Preventive Measures During the Flu Season

.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs advises the public of the onset of the flu season, which spans from October to March every year. During this period, “we do anticipate an increase in individuals experiencing flu-like or respiratory symptoms.”

According to the Ministry, “Flu symptoms can vary in intensity and include symptoms such as fever, chills and sweats, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, fatigue, headache and in severe cases, shortness of breath.

“The flu as its name suggests is caused by the influenza virus of which there are two types; Influenza A and Influenza B. Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly and can sometimes be mistaken for a common cold, but the flu typically has more intense symptoms. To date, Influenza A and B have been confirmed in persons seeking care for respiratory symptoms at our healthcare facilities with body aches and cough mentioned as the most notable symptoms. Other viruses such as RSV and COVID-19 can also cause respiratory symptoms. Presently, there is capacity in the country to detect these viruses once you are tested at a healthcare facility,” the Ministry stated in a release.

The Ministry of Health also emphasises the following preventive measures for reducing respiratory infections:

∙ Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

∙ Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick.

∙ Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.

∙ Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces regularly.

∙ Avoid going to work or school if you are feeling unwell to prevent the spread of the illness.

∙ Vaccinate

According to the Ministry’s statement, “The flu vaccine is available free of charge at our wellness centres. We strongly encourage vulnerable groups, including the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions, to receive the flu vaccine as an effective means of protection. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against both strains of influenza.

“If you or anyone you know is experiencing severe respiratory symptoms such as straining to breathe, sudden onset of shortness of breath, intense chest pain, rapid or shallow breathing and mental confusion or drowsiness please seek immediate medical attention at your nearest Wellness Centre.

“ The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs encourages all citizens to work together to keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safe, during this flu season.”
