The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) is enhancing its canine unit, which has been inactive for some time.
At a handing-over ceremony on Thursday, the RSLPF received a Canine (K-9) from the Gendarmerie. Minister for Home Affairs, Crime Prevention, and Persons with Disabilities, Jeremiah Norbert, emphasised the importance of working harmoniously, both regionally and internationally, in combating crime as sovereign states.
The receipt of the Canine (K-9) symbolises the tangible results of collaboration and mutual understanding.
Attendees at the ceremony, including Lieutenant Colonel Yannick Gache of Martinique, Police Commissioner Crusita Descartes-Pelius, and His Excellency French Ambassador Francis Etienne who reiterated the concept of working together for a social cause in the fight against crime.
Also present at the event were: Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Daasreane Greene; Allison Joseph, Consul General of Saint Lucia to the French Antilles; Daren Cenac, Director of Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA); Chief Fire Officer Ditney Downes; and Kosygin Fredrick, Assistant Controller-Enforcement, Customs and Excise Department.
Minister Norbert and the RSLPF’s high command were formally introduced to the RSLPF Canine (K-9), standing ready and alert, awaiting orders. A spokesperson noted that this Canine boasts extensive skills in interdiction.
Additionally, the use of canines in previous RSLPF exercises has been crucial for recovering and seizing contraband.
The RSLPF says it is confident that adding this highly trained Canine to its law enforcement family will enhance its operational efficiency and significantly contribute to the safety and security of all communities.
The RSLPF acknowledges the assistance provided by the “Commandements de la Gendarmerie” (COMGEND) through the Embassy of France to the OECS.
