The Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment recently joined family members and friends in joyously celebrating the remarkable milestone of Virgilius Margaret Eugene, who turned 100 on December 9, 2023.
Born in Delcer, Choiseul, on that auspicious day in 1923, Ms. Eugene stands as a living testament to a century of resilience, love, and the enduring spirit of the people of Saint Lucia.
Virgilius Margaret Eugene is the lone survivor among her siblings and has weathered the passage of time with grace and fortitude. Several years ago, she relocated to Castries, where she found solace in the company of her son and daughter in La Clery. However, life’s inevitable twists unfolded, and following the passing of her son, Ms. Eugene found herself embraced by the compassionate care of the good sisters at Faux A Chaux, Castries, where she has resided for the past 13 years.
On Saturday, December 9, Virgilius Margaret Eugene marked her centenary with a heartwarming mass in her honor. Overflowing with gratitude for the gift Ms. Eugene expressed her profound thanks to the sisters at Faux A Chaux for their unwavering love and care.
“I am grateful for every day and for the love that surrounds me. The sisters have been my family, and I count my blessings each day,” Ms. Eugene shared, her eyes reflecting a lifetime of memories and experiences.
During the celebratory mass, representatives of the Ministry of Equity, honoured to be in attendance, paid tribute to the centenarian on behalf of the people and government of Saint Lucia. In recognition of her extraordinary journey, a bouquet and a plaque were presented to Ms. Eugene, symbolizing a nation’s collective respect and admiration.

Her resilience and grace inspire us all, and the Ministry of Equity is privileged to be part of this momentous celebration,” remarked Andrea Alcide, Family Case Worker at the Division of Human Services and Family Affairs, Ministry of Equity, Social Justice and Empowerment.
