Crusita Descartes-Pelius is the first female to head the Saint Lucia Royal Police Force [RSLPF], though for the interim, in an acting position.
Prime Minister Phillip Pierre, Monday, disclosed that Pelius will replace outgoing Commissioner of Police (COP) Milton Desir.
While acknowledging the dedicated years of service that Desir provided to the force, he welcomed the acting COP, stating that it was a timely and decisive move to appoint her to such a prominent, yet challenging post.
“I’m elated for the women of the country, it’s a historic time for the women of the country …and Mrs. Pelius says she is going to be commissioner for all people, men and women,” PM Pierre told reporters at a press briefing.
With focus on a gender-balanced professional basis, the prime minister described this as a “proud feeling” to have a female in this top post, adding that: “It is a testimony of our faith and belief in the women of Saint Lucia”.
PM Pierre added: “Mrs. Pelius’ knowledge of policing had aided her to facilitate the smooth running of all departments where she was assigned.
“From her profile, Mrs. Pelius is well suited to take on her new role.”
Descartes-Pelius, a veteran officer, is a ‘decorated’ law enforcement professional with more than 30 years’ service in the force.
The new acting commissioner assumes the post with high ratings, after previously serving as Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) responsible for Corporate Services and Strategic Operations.
Descartes-Pelius acknowledged the confidence that has been placed in her to carry out her duties diligently, stating that: “Let me assure you … that I will do my best. I’m looking forward to the support of the men and women of the organization, while I lead the organization.”
After being enlisted into the RSLPF service in 1988, the acting COP career resume includes;
Attainment of the rank of Sergeant in 2001
Superintendent of Police in 2015
Successfully completed and participated in multiple theoretical and practical course and training exercises
Holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Studies, and Certificate in Public Administration from the University of the West Indies (UWI).
She has also served in several capacities in the organization, including the Marine Unit, Immigration Department, Territorial Policing, Information and Technology Unit, Police Complaints Unit, Regional Security System (RSS) and Interpol.
Descartes-Pelius steps in to take on the mantle of operations at a very crucial and challenging time in the country, as former COP Desir’s tenure ended on October, 14.
PM Pierre stated that Descartes-Pelius will head the Force during the transition to a new police commissioner, an advertised position.
