OAS Secretary General to Address Signal SALCC Lecture Event Tomorrow

All is in place for tomorrow’s major lecture to be delivered by the principal of the island’s highest tertiary institution, on the relationship between Carnival and The Black Atlantic.

That’s the theme of the presentation by Principal of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) Dr Keith Nurse which is carded for tomorrow’s signal event in celebration of the 5th annual Inter-American Week for People of African Descent in the Americas sponsored by the Organization of American States (OAS).

The full theme of Dr Nurse’s presentation is “Carnival and the Black Atlantic: Festivals, Social Movements and Diasporas” and will be a joint endeavor by the OAS and the SALCC.

But before Dr Nurse speaks, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, will virtually deliver some remarks.

Formal opening remarks will be by the SALCC’s Dean of Academics Dr Winston Phulgence, who’’ also be moderator, while a commentary will be delivered by Dr Yanique Hume, Head of Cultural Studies (UWI), to be followed by a Question & Answer session.

Closing remarks will be by Ambassador Jacinth Henry Martin, Coordinator of the Coordinating Office for the Offices and Units of the General Secretariat in Member-states.

Meanwhile, the head of the Office of the General Secretariat in Saint Lucia, Lilly G. Ching Soto says: “Saint Lucia has been preparing for Carnival, for the first time in two years and everyone is very excited.

“I find this event timely and an opportunity to extend our commemoration of the Inter-American Week for People of African Descent.

“I’m excited as Dr. Nurse will speak about ‘Carnival and the Black Atlantic…’ and we’ll hear from the OAS Secretary General, who will be addressing us virtually.”

Tomorrow’s event is also a precursor to a related Art Exhibition at SALCC from May 25-27, during which participants will win cash prizes, Art Supplies from M&C, lunches from Le Forte Restaurant at the College, day passes from The Body Holiday and Bay Gardens, Jewelry from Forever Charmed, Vouchers from The Coffee Shop, Spa treatments from the Landings, Vouchers from KFC and Dinner Vouchers from Oasis.
