Dr. Merle Clarke reelected President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association

Dr. Merle Clarke has been reelected President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association. The Association held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday March 27, 2021. In light of Covid-19, the meeting was held virtually, a move which was overwhelmingly endorsed by members.

Dr. Clarke in her address emphasized the importance of solidarity, mentorship, collaboration and reaching out to the public that members serve. Physicians/dentists were specially recognised for their unwavering commitment to providing the best quality healthcare to fellow citizens and urged to continue to advocate for affordable, equitable healthcare for all.

The outspoken, charismatic Dr. Merle Clarke, a Nephrologist by profession will lead a dynamic Executive group:

Dr. Martin Plummer, Paediatrician, is the new Vice President

Dr. Samantha Mathurin, Senior House Officer at the Respiratory Hospital – Treasurer

Dr. Indel Niles, General Practitioner attached to the Tapion Hospital ER Unit – Secretary

Dr. Johnoma Giffard Senior House Officer at the Respiratory Hospital, who served as Junior

Doctors’ Representative, will now serve as Assistant Secretary.

Reelected to the position of Public Relations Officer is Dr. Monique Monplaisir.

Dr. Sheba O’ Brian, Senior House Officer OKEU Hospital – General Practitioners’ Representative.

Dr. Tamara Semei-Spencer, Consultant Anesthesiologist/ICU Specialist, retained the position of Consultants’ Representative.

Dr. Janin Dublin McIntyre a Primary Care Dental Surgeon also returns as Dentists’ Representative.

Dr. Christi Gerald, House Officer, OKEU Hospital – Junior Doctors’ Representative.

The new Executive recognizes the challenges which are faced and will continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and policy makers in the fight against Covid-19.

A special appeal is being made to Saint Lucians to continue to adhere to the tried and tested public health protocols and to get vaccinated. The Association continues its open door policy and invites citizens to contact the secretariat if there are queries, concerns or a desire to have educational sessions with groups or agencies.

The election process was supervised by veteran Trade Unionist and President of the Trade Union Federation (TUF), Mr. Julian Monrose.
