A reported shark attack on the island of Nevis last weekend has prompted the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to issue an advisory cautioning “all users of the ocean to be extremely cautious when using the marine environment.”
The shark attack on a group of kayakers occurred on Booby Island. One of the kayakers had to be rushed to the Nevis hospital to undergo emergency surgery in an attempt to save her “severely chewed leg.”
According to locals, the presence of sharks in their waters may be subject to the lack of movement by cruise ships. The cruise industry was one of the hardest hit due to the global pandemic and has yet to recover.
The Department of Marine Resources of St. Kitts and Nevis confirmed in a release, an increase in reports of shark and human interactions within their exclusive zone.
